The South Tyne is a magical English river which cuts its steep passage though the rolling grouse moors of the high Pennines to then march below Hadrian’s Wall on its way to meet its sister North Tyne at Hexham. This spate river can be very generous indeed with excellent runs of late summer and autumn salmon, as well as large sporting sea trout! The South Tyne is also the perfect size for beginners to enjoy, as the pools are all easily covered by fly and wading over knee height is rarely required.

Our Salmon Fishing Experience days include what we all expect from quality salmon fishing days, namely, top quality accommodation (with plenty to do for non-fishing partners), fine food & wine (including lunch) and fabulous, fully guided salmon and sea trout fishing on two private rotating beats. Complete beginners are very welcome and qualified Spey casting tuition is on offer for those new to the art. Please also let us know if you require equipment.

You will stay at the increasingly famous Kirkstyle Inn near the Northumberland/Cumbria border and fish the river a stone’s throw away. The Inn manages a beautiful and secluded two kilometre, double-bank stretch of the upper South Tyne which has been virtually unfished for the last few years while the Inn’s refurbishment has been going on. The fishing will continue to be carefully managed and restricted to those guests staying at the Inn, or for parties of up to 6 rods (12 persons) staying at their adjacent Lodge, “The Old Rectory”.

Rods will fish for two days on the Inn’s gorgeous fly water which includes the prolific Eals and Whitwam pools! There are two beats which are fished on rotation by two or three rods in each group (no single rods) accompanied by a shared guide. This is exclusive fishing, and rods have a very good chance of hooking salmon or sea trout from August onwards given good water conditions. Fish actually arrive from the middle of June but in these often dry summer months fishing can be very tricky in low, clear water, so it pays to check conditions before you book summer rods. In Autumn, rain in the high Pennine hills upstream can usually be relied upon!

For the non-fisher, the high Northern Pennines are wonderful for walking and mountain biking and both the Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall are only short drives away. There are plenty of golf courses in the area too from the highest in England at Alston nearby, to the fabulous British Masters hosting venue at Close House.

In summary, these salmon fishing experience days include:
